Even though Oculus might have some problems in this period, it is not far fetched to say that VR is here to stay. Maybe the hardware is not exactly where we would love to see it, but the VR experience, as of today, is a very believable one. Enough to make people getting the gear. And enough to make developers give it the attention. Assetto Corsa is no exception, and after the decent implementation of the VR #driving experience, it looks like Kunos is looking even further, thanks to the superior positioning system Vive has to offer. In his characteristic style, Marcos posted a teasing video on his channel, showcasing the WIP possibilities VR brings. I am not an adopter myself (yet) but I must say that the feeling of being "there" is conveyed even on a simple 2D video. Have a look:
After posting the video, it didn't take long for the question to be asked
:
That means that the Vive will get officially supported ?
Marco: We have arranged a dedicated room for VR in our new studio (including a motion simulator to reduce the sickness), and this week finally we have completed the setup for Vive, that definitely isn't "plug&play" like the Oculus (both in terms of hardware and software setup), but once installed, the HTC Vive has shown a very interesting potential. So, now at least we can evaluate properly the change to support it in Assetto Corsa, with some dedicated R&D. It's early to confirm if we'll support it, but we'll try.
Maaan, it's getting more and more difficult to fight that "buy" button.. Meanwhile, cheers and have fun to those early (not so early anymore) adopters.
