This could be a nice F1 grandprix. While I've never driven it (did not even knew it before you brought it up), it seems to have a nice flow. Definitely nicer than Zandvoort :D. Actually, not even sure this is a compliment

First pass on Physical Mesh :-D

I know this topic has been detailed here and there on the forum, but would you mind doing like a quick video tutorial explaining how you do this mesh please ? It would really help the entire community :)

How's Prosts head being thrown around like that - a time before HANS devices … geez these guys neck muscles must have been ridiculous.

@Nericksenna Very cool vids man. Love it! : - )

@Tibor Solyom wow that's an amazing overview … clicking on the tabs to show the exact changes and how they relate to the previous version is a first I've seen shown that well.

Every layout of Kyalami is outstanding (except of the chicane between 93-08) IMO.
Couldn't agree more.

I've had my sets of images in my ref folder as well ... showing the various stages.
Ill share what I have just for kicks.
But the link sent by @Tibor Solyom is definitive.

As is evident, there are many iterations of this track, and the organic development of the track over the years is testament to its survival. At many points in time it was close to being demolished. And we are very lucky that the track has been saved.

Beautiful diagram: (1961)

This version (1993) had the infamous chicane which was added and then removed.
It was ok for the car guys, but it was a killer for the bikes.

No chicane version (2009)

And then the current iteration (2016) showing the red changes.
IMO this has been a really good upgrade to the layout.
The track flows better than the previous layout.

...

Finally, showing the original 1961 layout and the current 2016 track Im busy building and the shared section that has remained unaltered.

I never tried the new one obviously but now I think I would (just a little) prefer the 2009 version. Only because I loved the flow of the 1-2-3 corners in to the braking zone of the 4. But it's only theoretical of course (can't wait to check if it's true). And emotional I guess because it was one of my first favourite tracks when I started playing racing games :)
The classic one is really gorgeous with vintage cars, always so much fun racing there, but it would be pointless nowadays with modern racing cars, and very dangerous too.
Do you consider building any of the older layouts in the future?

I'm a very 1961-version kind of racer :D
Me too :)
But like I said before every layout is gorgeous, not only the first one like many people say (e.g. the guy in the first video). And if the track had a more peaceful history they still couldn't keep the old layout forever because it wouldn't fit to modern race cars at all.
Fortunately we can race with our virtual vintage cars on the classic layout anytime :D

Im getting tiered just doing this one ! :- P The amount of work is nuts. :) But never say never I guess.

UPDATE:
  • Been busy blocking out and rebuilding the track edge topology.
  • Blocking out basic main materials.
  • Importing and tweaking scales on old assets.
  • Started final pass on tweaking some textures and shader settings.
