UPDATE!

My dumb ass was exporting in CM.

Which is weird, b/c original scale was CM, system was Meters, so you'd assume exporting back in CM would give me a 1.0 scale. IDK, but exported in Meters and that set the scale back to 1.0 instead of 100.0 and all works now.

Thanks again everyone

Hi, i'm working on a conversion and the track wont load in game, i click "Start" and then it just comes back to the race menu. Any ideas what could be causing this?? Surface names are ok, and dummy names are also ok...

I'm converting a track from GTL, used 3DsimED to export FBX and textures from the .trk file. Then import FBX with 3ds Max, deleted all the unnecesary objects used in GTL to indicate time sectors, pit entrance and such, and created the dummies for pits, start, hotlap, and times. Changed surface mesh names to ROAD, GRASS, SAND, WALL, PITS-ZONE, etc. Exported to FBX following the instructions posted here, and imported with ksEditor. Selected the .dds files to some materials that didn't had a texture assigned, and then exported to .kn5. I skipped selecting shaders because i need to test the track first to finish all the work to be done in 3dsMax, and as i undersand (and have done before), the track should work despite that...
Created folder structure: ai (with nothing in it yet), data (crew, lighting and surfaces files), ui (ui_track file) and kn5 file named the same as the track folder.

And that would be it :)

I tried converting this same track some time ago and it worked. Then i somehow deleted the work done and i'm here again tryin to get it done, but i don't know what i'm doing wrong this time... i start the track in AC and then it just comes back to the main menu...

that's quite comprehensive. so id say, no capitals letters in folder or file titles, and is Y axis pointing upon those dummies ? these are the usual culprits.

What race mode are you using when you click start?

In 3dsmax highlight all objects with AC_ (pits, start, time, etc.). Then right click, hit unlink, then export fbx. Open fbx in kseditor, export kn5, test.

If you can, show me your object trees in 3dsmax. Are they all single or are they all linked to an fbx parent? I had the same problem and unlinking all AC objects worked for me.

When converting fbx, it listed all items under TrackName.fbx> in 3dsmax, so i had to collapse it to view all models, for some reason kseditor didnt like that, it wanted my AC materials seperate from the .fbx parent model.

You mean this tree?? these are the only objects with parents... i tried unlinking them all and testing, no success. When i started this work, i just created single dummies. I don't know if this parenting structure is necessary with dummies and objects for pits, start, etc. I thought maybe the previous single dummies had some problem, so i copied this structure from another mod track that works.

Question.. how to fix "sticky walls"?
Walls cannot be a flat two sided object. A box is OK when there is some distance between each opposite facing side. But when the opposite sides are together they become sticky. The proper way to make walls is to have a low poly, invisible, single sided, or box wall that is the actual wall. And what you see is simply visual and not physical.

A simple plane acting as a wall can also become sticky when you hit it from the opposite side to where normals are pointing.
